On September 25, ADAPT members led by Dawn Russell visited the DC office. While there Dawn shared her story with the front desk staffers and asked to speak with Allison Martin (Counsel allison_martin@alexander.senate.gov). After 10 minutes or so, Allison came with another staffer. She said that the hold up she knew of was still the CBO score. Dawn said that they were working on getting an idea of the financing. Allison was surprised to hear that Senator Gardener of Colorado was on the bill and agree to reach out to his staff to "hear his strategy on this". Allison and Dawn both will reach out to Gardener and then follow up with each other in a few weeks.

Allison Donald, Dawn Russell, Bruce Darling, Stephanie Woodward, Gregg Beratan, and Hope Mosley met with Brandon and David Cleary (Via conference call) David spoke for the office calling DIA an unfunded mandate and saying the senator objected on this ground because he supports the States' rights to determine how these matters were handled. Brandon distributed a letter from the Senator to Gregg expanding on this argument saying the bill involved multiple unfunded mandates. David was asked if the Senator supported Disabled American's Constitutional right to Freedom. After repeated questioning he said he did. He was then asked if he felt the states rights outweighed this individual right to freedom. He refused to answer. That was intrigued by Scalia's recognition of disabled people's right to live in Freedom in the Olmstead oral arguments.
asked us to follow up in a couple weeks.

2/20/18: Met with Brandon in Alexander's office. Discussed DIA, ADA, and MFP bill S2227. He said the Senator/Chairman Alexander?s office said they support DIA, but he doesn?t cosponsor bills in the HELP Committee, but a quick search on congress.gov showed that to be false. He?s cosponsored plenty of bills while in HELP committee. Brandon said he will talk to HELP Committee staffers to help find a lead R cosponsor of DIA.
Brandon stressed the Chairman needs stories on the issues discussed today from people across the US as Chairman of the HELP Committee as well as from his constituents.
