Met with legislative director Nicole Varner. We spoke with her about the bill, and explained Veasey, as a co sponsor of the iteration of the bill presented in the 114th Congress, should co-sponsor the new bill. Nicole will talk to the Cheif of Staff about co-sponsoring the bill and make a decision.

Note from Sheryl Grossman-
1/29/19, Nicole Varner Leg Dir, nicole.varner@mail.house.gov, was unavailable, but I spoke directly with Marc and he said there is no reason why they will not sign back on and to follow up with Nicole.

Visited office and gave a packet for Nicole. Followed up with this email:

Good Afternoon Ms. Varner,

I stopped by Congressman Veasey's office this afternoon to follow up with you about the Disability Integration Act and I left a packet for you as well.

I understand that you met with my colleagues Sheryl and Lindsay in early November about cosponsoring the DIA. At that time you had indicated that you didn't see any issues with the bill and thought that the Congressman would cosponsor, and you asked for a follow up in a few weeks.

As session is coming to a close, I wanted to check in to see if Congressman Veasey would cosponsor the DIA before the end of session. Amy Bos at Congressman Sensenbrenner's office is still eagerly accepting cosponsors. Additionally, we are anticipating an early reintroduction next session in January and we would love for Congressman Veasey to commit to cosponsoring next session as well.

I will be on the Hill tomorrow morning if you'd like to meet to discuss the bill. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Stephanie Woodward

10/4- Sheryl Grossman:
Met with Nicole Varner, Leg Dir. She thanked me for coming back because she has been too busy to bring this up before the Congressman. She thinks that they can sign on to both, no red flags, but she has not brought it up yet. Check back in a few weeks.

On August 30th, 2018, C4CI sent an email to Nicole Varner (nicole.varner@mail.house.gov) asking why is not a cosponsor of DIA and whether the representative would commit to being an initial co-sponsor of DIA if elected to the next Congress.

Ellen Taverna writes on 8/13/2018 at 2:16PM:
On 8/9/18, Ellen Taverna stopped by and dropped off DIA packet and Texas Democratic Party Resolution supporting DIA. Nicole Varner is out of town until 8/11/18. Need follow up.

Subject: Cosponsorship of the Disability Integration Act (HR.2472)

Congressman Veasey was a cosponsor of the Disability Integration Act during the 114th Congress (then HR.5689), but he has not yet signed on as a DIA cosponsor during the 115th (HR.2472). The bills are virtually identical. Only very minor changes were made to address some drafting issues which has resulted in even more broad-based support for the bill. Attached is an information packet explaining DIA as well as the Dear Colleague letter from Sensenbrenner???s office inviting cosponsors.

If the Congressman has some concern preventing him from continuing to support this critically important civil rights legislation that protects the Constitutional rights to Life and Liberty for Disabled Americans, we would like to discuss that. Otherwise, we look forward to him again signing on as a cosponsor. To sign on, contact Amy Bos at Amy.Bos@mail.house.gov.

Thank you.
